A resuscitative thoracotomy (sometimes referred to as an emergency department thoracotomy, trauma thoracotomy or, colloquially, as "cracking the chest") is a thoracotomy performed to aid in the resuscitation of a major trauma patient who has sustained severe thoracic or abdominal trauma.
