In the midst of such numberless attempted applications of so many experiments, repeated every day, it is almost impossible that general laws should not frequently be brought to light; so that great discoveries would be frequent, though great inventors be rare. — from Democracy in America — Volume 2 by Alexis de Tocqueville
The Muscovian emperors reclaim eagles to fly at hinds, foxes, &c., and such a one was sent for a present to [3235] Queen Elizabeth: some reclaim ravens, castrils, pies, &c., and man them for their pleasures. — from The Anatomy of Melancholy by Robert Burton
most extraordinary riddle entered
When, at length, we had concluded our examination, and the intense excitement of the time had, in some measure, subsided, Legrand, who saw that I was dying with impatience for a solution of this most extraordinary riddle, entered into a full detail of all the circumstances connected with it. — from The Works of Edgar Allan Poe — Volume 1 by Edgar Allan Poe

Our pious Fathers, feeling well what importance lay in the speaking of man to men, founded churches, made endowments, regulations; everywhere in the civilized world there is a Pulpit, environed with all manner of complex dignified appurtenances and furtherances, that therefrom a man with the tongue may, to best advantage, address his fellow-men. — from On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History by Thomas Carlyle
manuscript entitled Rudo Ensayo
An interesting discovery in this reference was made some years ago in the shape of a figure of the Cretan Labyrinth, of circular type, roughly engraved amid other pictographs on the wall of the ruined Casa Grande , an old Indian erection in Pinal County, Arizona, U.S.A. An exactly similar figure, with the addition of some unknown symbol opposite its "entrance" ( Fig. 131 ), was also found in a manuscript entitled "Rudo Ensayo" (Rough Essay), written by a Spaniard who visited the country—the home of the Pima Indians—in 1761 or 1762. — from Mazes and Labyrinths: A General Account of Their History and Development by W. H. Matthews
military exercise reminded Edward
That of Fergus, especially while issuing orders to his followers during their military exercise, reminded Edward of a favourite passage in the description of Emetrius: —whose voice was heard around, Loud as a trumpet with a silver sound. — from Waverley; Or, 'Tis Sixty Years Since by Walter Scott
more energy rapidity enlightenment
These beings are more worthy than we are, they have many more organs and faculties, they must therefore, in employing their disposable faculties according to their will, just as we employ ours according to our will, be able to dispose, to work, to manœuvre all inanimate matter, and to do all this among themselves, and also with respect to intelligent beings who are their inferiors, with much more energy, rapidity, enlightenment, and wisdom than we possess, we who nevertheless do it for the beasts subordinate to us. — from The Day After Death; Or, Our Future Life According to Science (New Edition) by Louis Figuier

most expensive recorded example
"Da mihi basium"—give me a kiss—he is fabled to have said to Archbishop Aethelnoth, and on receiving it to have taken the salute as acquiescence in the request—"Da mihi Bosham": probably the earliest and also the most expensive recorded example in England of this particular form of humour. — from Highways and Byways in Sussex by E. V. (Edward Verrall) Lucas
One morning Ernest rose earlier than his wont, and sauntered carelessly through the conservatory which adjoined his sitting-room; observing the plants with placid curiosity (for besides being a little of a botanist, he had odd visionary notions about the life of plants, and he saw in them a hundred mysteries which the herbalists do not teach us), when he heard a low and very musical voice singing at a little distance. — from Ernest Maltravers — Volume 01 by Lytton, Edward Bulwer Lytton, Baron
This tab, called Hiding in Plain Sight,
shows you passages from notable books where your word is accidentally (or perhaps deliberately?)
spelled out by the first letters of consecutive words.
Why would you care to know such a thing? It's not entirely clear to us, either, but
it's fun to explore! What's the longest hidden word you can find? Where is your name hiding?
